And it is not strange that both scientists and amateurs have been busy worming out secrets from these pictures - our oldest monumental art. The approach to rock art has been mainly aesthetical, and its information value has been underestimated. The use of the rock carvings as a source of archaeological information seems to have been – with a few exceptions – marginal throughout the history of research.
